A robot vacuum can keep your floors clean enough to reduce the frequency of hoovering manually. Choose one that has good navigation, can clean corners and stairs, and has a large dust bin that requires emptying only once in a while.
There are models that can mop and charge themselves, which is a feature that is essential for families with children or pets. A lot of the top performers in our tests also offer decent obstacle-avoiding capabilities.
1. Roomba iRobot i3+ from iRobot EVO
The i3+ EVO and its i3 EVO sibling, the i3 EVO are both identical robots that differ only in that the i3+ has self-emptying features. The i3+ is an excellent option for those who want a fully automated, hands-off cleaning experience, but are willing to manually empty the dustbin of the robot when it is full.
Both robots are adept at cleaning up surface debris from carpets and hard floors, and they're excellent in getting around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates a smart maps of your home that assist the i3+ to navigate and clean efficiently. The i3+ does not feature obstacle avoidance features like the i7+ or any other top-rated robots that we tested. It can get stuck on power cords and socks and have difficulty navigating between different surfaces, like carpet and hardwood.
iRobot recommends that you tidy up the area where the i3+ EVO vacuums before using it. This includes getting rid of any toys or other items it may encounter. It's also recommended to keep the bin and filter clear so they don't become clogged with dirt. When the i3+'s internal bin is filled or the battery is depleted, it returns to its docking station, automatically emptying its debris into the station's external dustbin and continues cleaning the area where it started. The i3+ EVO's battery lasts for approximately an hour and a half continuous use, and takes around three hours to recharge.
2. iRobot i7+ Roomba
The iRobot Roomba i7+ is the most powerful model in iRobot's flagship line and has the most up-to-date features. click here to read -charging, self-navigating and the most crucial feature of all -- it has a self-emptying dustbin that eliminates one of the main sources of maintenance for any robot vacuum.
The Roomba i7+ is able to remember up to 10 floor plans and their names using Imprint Smart Mapping, an application that lets it map rooms so it can clean them more efficiently. It also works with iRobot Home to schedule cleaning tasks, and it can direct your robot using the app or voice.
In our testing, the i7+ was faster and more maneuverable than our top choice which was the eufy RoboVac G30, and it took large pieces of pet hair from all surfaces kinds including carpeting. Its main advantage over the eufy, is its self-emptying dustbin, which eliminates a major cause of maintenance and lowers the amount of time spent cleaning.
We were also awestruck by the i7+'s compatibility with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant AI services. We utilized these services to instruct the robot on how to begin, stop, or pause cleaning sessions, as well as to move around the room, and even vacuum a specific area. Connecting the i7+ to these services was easy and straightforward through the iRobot Home app. Once connected we were able to give the i7+ voice commands like "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options to manage the i7+'s preferences and monitoring its performance.
3. Dyson Cyclone V10
This tiny Dyson model is an all-sports car in a world of vacuums powered by cordless that resemble minivans and buses. It has the power and features to replace a stand-up vacuum for many households however, it can also fit in well next to the coffee table or a bookshelf where you can move it around like an enchanted tool.
The V10 is powered by a 7-cell, high-energy lithium-ion battery that can provide fade-free power for 60 minutes. The advanced whole-machine filtering system traps allergens, then releases fresh air into your home. The specialized head uses rigid nylon bristles that penetrate deep into carpets, and then pick up large particles or fine dust. The model also comes with a dock that charges to 100% in 3.5 hours and provides easy access to two attachments as well as a clip for a wand. This is a big improvement over the older Dysons models, which require a lengthy charge and are difficult to store.
The main issue with the V10 is its limited run time. As CR's tests show, its advertising claims of up to 60 minutes are not true. This is a standard, not exceptional, battery-powered cordless vacuum's running time. It's enough time to sweep the average-sized home however, it's not enough time to reach every area. (A second time usually works). However, this model doesn't have its benefits: It's lighter and maneuverable than older cordless Dysons, and its vacuuming performance is significantly superior on carpets with a low pile.
4. iRobot Roomba 694"
The 694 is a basic robot vacuum that's a great choice for those who don't have lots of money to invest in the latest model of robot. It was able to remove most types of debris and sizes in our tests and would often go over the same area multiple times for an extensive clean. Its flat front side helps it to reach into corners and along the walls' edges which is a nice addition.
Its navigation system is smart and uses iAdapt technology to steer clear of obstacles and guide you through your home. However, it lacks the ability to map that is found in more advanced models, including our top picks, i3+EVO and J7+ Series. Because of this, it can sometimes get stuck on things like phone cords or furniture that isn't as sturdy, and often runs out of battery power before making it back to its home base.
The Xiaomi Mi robot vacuum is superior to the Roomba 694 in all aspects in that it has fewer parts that need regular cleaning, is fitted with an allergen-trapping HEPA filter, incurs lower recurring costs, has more advanced automation capabilities and is better at maneuvering itself. It also has a bigger dustbin and charges quicker.
The elegant RoboVac X8 is superior to the Roomba 694 for most purposes, because it has a longer battery life, can change its suction power mode on its own and has physical boundary strips, and is operated by your phone's voice assistant. It is also more robust, has a more powerful motor, and is more effective on low-pile and bare floors.
5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+
Samsung is a brand is found on all kinds of electronic gadgets for your home It's no surprise that they're one of the most popular mop and robot vacuum manufacturers. Their Jet Bot AI+ is loaded with cutting-edge onboard intelligence technology for navigation and obstacle avoidance.
The app provides a range of customization options for your robotic cleaner. These include mopping levels, virtual barriers and behavior customizations, docking frequency settings and more. It's easy to understand and easy to use, just as is the case with other Samsung devices.
In our testing our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ excelled on hard floors and handled dog hair (on carpet) very well, picking up 86 percent of it. However, it did not do particularly well at avoiding taller objects like cords and socks which was disappointing. It's also more expensive than other models we've tested, and this could be a deal breaker for some buyers.
The app allows you to access the camera onboard of the smart vacuum. You can also set up live streaming from the robot's cleaning area. This feature allows you to check in on pets or children when you're away from home. The dustbin and the filter can be washed for an easy, quick clean-up. The Jet Bot AI+ also comes with a clean station that self-empties to keep the robot's trash bin clean and optimizes its suction power for each cleaning run.
6. Black & Decker Robot Vacuum
Contrary to other robotic vacuums which are designed for both carpets and hard floors, Black and Decker robots are specifically designed for hard floors. They have an extra wide cleaning path and dust bins that are 2 times larger than other models. This lets them clean the area for longer. Plus, they include two side sweepers to clean up around edges and in corners. The POWERSERIES model comes with AutoSense that automatically adjusts the power level according to whether it's picking up surface dirt or embedded dirt. It also includes a smart application that lets you see the virtual map, and control functions and schedules. Plus, you can monitor the status of the vacuum's battery and send it back to its dock for charging at the touch of one button. The app allows you to personalize the LED lights on the top of the vacuum using different colors so you can clearly see the areas where it's focused or where it's got stuck.
The app also makes it easy to steer the robot manually should you need to. For example, my living room rug has a darkly colored border that tends to make it difficult for other robots I've tested. The HRV 425BL, however, continued to move across the border, without notifying the edge. The ability to program a weekly cleaning schedule for each week is a time-saving convenience.
